@currentlyinscience: Margaret Hamilton, the software engineer who led the team that wrote the on-board flight software for NASA's Apollo missions, has died at 90. She is widely credited with helping save the Apollo 11 landing: when the guidance computer overloaded minutes before touchdown, her team's priority-scheduling and restart design kept the critical landing tasks running. In Mission Control, computer specialist Jack Garman told guidance officer Steve Bales the alarms were safe to ignore, and Bales called "go." She also helped popularize the term "software engineering" and received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2016. Rest in peace. Source: MIT, Smithsonian Magazine, The Register, Associated Press

studying science instantly makes anyone a feminist. the modern scientific community in my experience has a whole different Overton window on womens rights than the rest of the country. the faults that we do have come from a lack of considering the differences and neexing to be told

sanjg :

She was in fact the first person hired to develop the operating system and the first woman hired for such a position at NASA
