The human heart is one of the most important organs in the body because it pumps blood to every part of us. Without the heart, our organs would not receive the oxygen and nutrients they need to function. The heart works every second of our lives, even when we are sleeping. It is a powerful muscle that keeps us alive by moving blood through a network of blood vessels around the body. This process is called circulation.
The heart is located in the chest, slightly towards the left side. It is about the size of a person’s closed fist and is divided into four chambers. These are the right atrium, right ventricle, left atrium and left ventricle. Each chamber has a special job that helps blood travel in the correct direction. The heart also has valves that open and close to stop blood from flowing backwards.
Blood travels through two main circuits. The first circuit takes blood to the lungs to collect oxygen. Blood that has already delivered oxygen to the body returns to the right side of the heart. The right ventricle then pumps this oxygen-poor blood through the pulmonary arteries to the lungs. In the lungs, the blood releases carbon dioxide, which we breathe out, and collects fresh oxygen when we breathe in.
The second circuit sends oxygen-rich blood to the rest of the body. After collecting oxygen in the lungs, blood returns to the left side of the heart. The left ventricle has a thick muscular wall because it must pump blood with enough force to reach the entire body. It pushes the blood into the aorta, the largest artery in the body. From there, blood travels through smaller arteries and tiny blood vessels called capillaries, delivering oxygen and nutrients to organs such as the brain, liver, kidneys and muscles.
Our organs depend on this process to keep us alive. The brain needs oxygen to control our thoughts, movements and memories. The kidneys filter waste from the blood, while the liver processes nutrients and helps remove harmful substances. Our muscles need oxygen to move, run and play sports. Blood also carries nutrients from the digestive system to cells throughout the body and transports waste products away so they can be removed.
