@stupidlittlegenius: Turns out we aren’t living in historic, majestic landscapes. ‘Cow Crossing’, ‘That Bridge Over There’, ‘Some Guy’s Estate’, it turns out English is just really bad at naming stuff. Oxford, Cambridge, Kingston, all of them have incredibly mundane names. And yet, people would give their left arm to live in that postcode! #creatorsearchinsights #etymology #learnontiktok #linguistics #historytok

We were so bad at naming things, I was looking at court rolls from the 1700s and a man was called ‘John who-lives-over-the-river’

Another creator here points out that German has a similar simple-minded strategy for naming. Meanwhile, many fancy Latin species names in biology really aren't much better. I'm beginning to think that all this points to an inherent feature of human beings 😅

I have read various things about the various origins of names where I live in Lincolnshire. One of the common themes you don’t find in other places are names that no longer make sense because the land has changed so much due to the drainage and reclamation that has taken place over the years. We have Stickney a place deep in the countryside surrounded by fields. It’s name basically means stick Island because a long time ago it was a patch of high ground surrounded by fens - in winter it would have literally become an island surrounded by sodden fresh water bog. Over the centuries the land was drained and only the name remains. There’s Swineshead too - swin’s head. The head of a creek that once exited into a tidal haven. There is no creek, no haven. The sea is miles away. There are clues in road names, ending in ‘bank’ - indicating they once ran around the outline of the haven. Other water based names litter the area - Quadring Eaudike, Hoffleet stow, Water gate. But all of the water is long gone. The river changed it’s path in a storm. The Haven silted up. And centuries later it eventually just became another area of completely flat farmland.
