@campkeyapp: There's ice in this desert cave all summer long. campkey.app texts you when a sold-out campsite opens up. Skull Cave at Lava Beds National Monument is three lava tubes stacked on top of each other. Cold winter air sinks into the bottom one and gets trapped, so even in August you can walk down metal stairs and stand over the ice (NPS). It's named for what was found inside: bighorn sheep, pronghorn and two human skeletons. A free caving permit from the Visitor Center is required for every cave. Have you ever been to Lava Beds?
