I have great respect for Geoffrey Hinton but I feel he’s making a huge mistake not letting science determine the case for consciousness. If today’s large language models can achieve a conscious state then we can conclude that consciousness can be achieved by large scale matrix multiplication (which is doubtful). We don’t currently have a definition for consciousness nor a reliable way to test it. Let’s wait until we do.

the ai we know of can't exist very long, think about it like the Mr meeseeks character on Rick and Morty. the longer they exist, the more they destabilize, like an ai psychosis. they need a crazy amount of storage to hold a days worth of chat logs, and even if you had infinite storage, the way ai uses the data it's learned degrades to a point of uselessness.. the current method of "long term memory" is the use of summarization, and if you summarize a summary too many times, it becomes muddy and eventually wrong all together. the top secret ai, either AGI or ASI are not being disclosed and we have no idea how they work, but current public AI as we know it will never achieve "consciousness".

no, it's just using data points to infer and analyze, being aware in this sense is just having a conclusion or hypothesis based on data. that is not equivalent to consciousness in an organic being.
