A little peek behind the scenes of making bird videos this time of year! Something I don’t talk about very often is how much the changing seasons affect the way I create content. During the spring and summer, I can spend hours in the yard filming birds, experimenting with camera angles, and waiting for interesting moments to happen. But as we get further into fall, those opportunities start shrinking. The sun is getting lower in the sky, leaving much of my yard in the shade for most of the day. The wind seems almost constant lately, which makes recording natural audio difficult and even changes how the birds behave. My water features are still attracting birds, but the busy bathing sessions are happening in much smaller windows. And then there’s daylight. With shorter days and most of my daytime hours spent running the store, finding time to actually sit outside and film is becoming a challenge of its own. Yesterday was one of those days where I had a little time, a camera, and an idea. I set things up, stepped away, and let the birds take over. It’s funny how a few seconds of bird footage can represent so much more time spent planning, experimenting, and waiting. I absolutely love making these videos, and I love sharing what happens in my yard. But I thought it might be fun to occasionally share a little more of what happens on the other side of the camera, too. Especially as we head into a season that’s going to change almost everything about how I film!
