A man trapped inside a giant gas station sign more than 130ft off the ground thought he might die and recorded goodbye message to his wife and kids. Electrician AJ Gow and a co-worker were using a telescopic boom lift while servicing the roadside marker in Wilmington, Illinois, on 21 July, when a mechanical failure left him trapped inside. The co-worker climbed down to get water and a battery-powered fan when the lift malfunctioned. He was unable to get back up, and Mr Gow was left wedged in a small compartment at the top of the sign. “In the moment, it was getting hairy, I was genuinely getting scared, and I didn’t know what was going to happen. And yeah, I was freaking out,” he said, recalling the incident to ABC7 Chicago. At first, Mr Gow expected the problem to be quickly fixed, but by mid-afternoon he had been trapped for about four hours and started to worry. Mr Gow had no water or fan, and the heat inside the structure was becoming increasingly difficult to tolerate. “Eventually, I started to feel like crap and I told him (the co-worker), you know, call EMS,” Mr Gow said. As the hours passed, Mr Gow began to panic, and his thoughts turned to his family. “I was genuinely getting scared, and I didn’t know what was going to happen,” he recounted, adding that he recorded messages for his wife and children. “God forbid if something were to actually happen, it was my final words. So essentially a goodbye without saying goodbye.” The eventual rescue was complicated by the height of the sign, with firefighter ladders generally only reaching 100ft. A lift tall enough to reach Mr Gow was later found in a nearby city.
