Wait yesssssss bc I’ve been so uninspired by what everyone is wearing atm. BUT as someone who is into fashion it’s forcing me to reconsider what my personal style is without any influence because the trends rn are boring AF.

Ehh I think it’s less of a STEM thing but more of social media tbh. When people are getting fed to them what is “cool girl” by an algorithm they do no real work to curate their own sense of style

as an artsy/fashion girlie who's also an engineer, it's so frustrating how many of my fellow STEM ppl just don't think the arts are important at all. bc the thing is that being creative can make you better at STEM stuff!! can't even tell you how many times I've impressed ppl just by thinking outside the box a little.

Interesting take, from my experience as someone who did a STEM degree being in STEM does not devalue liberal arts at all if anything places more importance on creativity as it’s something not easily attained, it’s aspirational. There’s a reason tech bros still try and enter fashion and cinema..

I remember being a teenager in the 90s and yes there were trends but we also experimented a ton with our personal style. I see teens today and they are all wearing the EXACT outfits, it’s so depressing. Literal cut and paste- hair, makeup, clothes, everything. I was around a group of boys who were all wearing a black hoodie and jogging pants and they started teasing a kid who walked up in khakis! They looked like Stormtroopers and the kid with style was the outcast. Not at all how we grew up.

I also feel this way about shareholders and how every brand is beholden to them when they go public so everything sucks now. Art and fashion are so affected by it too and I feel like the STEM thing goes hand in hand with that

Yes!! Personal style is built brick by brick and over yearsss. You have to be afraid to fail and experiment to figure out what works for you.

As a person who works in stem - my personal street style is SOOOOOO DIFFERENT than my work fits. I would love to pull looks at work but it’s just not applicable.

Waittttt this is spot on. Also I think the effect of AI on art and creativity has a similar outcome with folks thinking it’s formulaic and not based on energy, intention, and unique taste

You see art student and how they dress and them experimenting with their identity and people either call it corny, boring or trendy ( which is fine they are literally in school to expand their artistic abilities) so annoying

yes and everyone only wears stuff if other people are ie. humanities are subjective whereas STEM is objective and clearly answred. people are coveting the end result rather than messing up and having a true opinion.

I also feel like some people are so hellbent on looking different than everyone else that they just put things together that objectively don’t work. But I guess that’s better than copying everyone else….

And what if i said this is why most tv music and movies suck now bc of this devaluation of the arts in high school and college. Not just fashion. There just a lack of color in life now.
