@kaylatheshow: Sinners gave us a glimpse at the life that many Americans really experienced. Hiding who they were to get ahead or to survive. White Passing was more than just having light skin. It was a way of living for many people. #tiktokmademelearnit #learnhistoryontiktok
And then there were people who said that Hailee Steinfeld (who is the exact same amount of black that Mary was in the movie) was miscast and that someone like Zendaya should’ve gotten the role…

This is why I found her and Stack’s ending oddly sweet. She was able to (un)live to witness a future where her mixed ancestry didn’t matter as much as it did in the 1930s — emphasis on “as much”, though — and she was able to be with the man she loves. (Side note: I only first watched Sinners recently because I was put off by the fact that it falls into the “horror” genre and I’m a wimp, but I wish I’d not waited because it’s a MASTERPIECE)

The same thing applied to Indigenous peoples, however settlers actually paid $5 to become enrolled into federally recognized tribe.

yes younger generations don't know this history because of the progress made, AND there's been systematic efforts to not teach this in schools

A lot of movies cast racially ambiguous people as characters meant to be white passing, but Sinners was the first time I ever saw an actor in a white passing character role that made me go “oh hang on, she’s black? oh…. I see it I guess” which is exactly how being white passing woulda worked

Yessss this is such an important topic that often gets overlooked! Personally I thought I always looked like I belonged to my "ancestry & ethnicity" but of my ethnicity people come in all different shades and it's so interesting to see their experience with racism and oftentimes you realize the absurdity of this "being white and being colored" structures white supremacists set up.

As someone who is biracial black and white and white passing, I literally gasped realizing Mary was mixed bc it’s the first movie character I’ve ever seen who is LITERALLY just like me!

i find it interesting on how much our views on race have changed, since me as someone who is only 25% black, i have been seen as fully white, and people don’t believe me till i explain that my full blk grandpa was light skin, but back then someone who was even just 5% was treated the same as a full blk person.

Explaining “one-drop” laws to students is never an easy topic because they can’t wrap their head around being considered biracial or multiracial wasn’t an option until after 2010

The one drop rule is part of the reason why so many people think they are descended from a Cherokee princess too. Some of them just wanted land, but some were hoping to avoid the stigma that came from being black while having an “explanation” for their darker skin and hair.

Wait so why are people hoping for genetics? Like why is someone who’s very white hoping for African ancestry that’s close in time and vice versa in the modern day? Sorry if this comes off rude in anyway

My dad is half Filipino but I am very white passing. I think being a quarter or half mixed is a unique life experience if you look white. Racism is presented right in front of you because people don’t know you’re mixed. It makes me dislike so many people because they let their guard down around me and think it’s safe to say terrible things. Growing up experiencing that was gnarly. So was seeing my dad deal with direct racism.

Thinking about people who passed (often pushed to by family for access to a ‘better’ life) & how that meant cutting themselves off from family, friends, community & support system is heartbreaking. I know it was complicated. It’s still so profoundly sad.
