A few days ago, people were talking about Cristiano Ronaldo as if he had suddenly become a problem for Portugal. They questioned his age, his place in the team and what he could still offer. And I kept asking myself, ‘Are we talking about the same Cristiano Ronaldo who has spent more than two decades proving people wrong?’ Jorge Jesus has every right to make tactical decisions. No player should be guaranteed a starting position simply because of his name. But there’s a difference between leaving a player on the bench and making him feel as though everything he has contributed suddenly means nothing. Cristiano isn’t some young player trying to prove he belongs. He’s carried Portugal through difficult periods, delivered important goals and represented his country under enormous pressure. Then I watched him return to Al Nassr and score again. After the goal, I had a conversation with him. I looked at him and said, ‘Cristiano, it’s just 20 to 1,000. You’re getting closer!’ He smiled and said, ‘Ange, I’m not chasing a number. I’m chasing the next goal. The number will take care of itself.’ I thought, ‘That’s the mentality right there.’ No long speech. No argument about Jorge Jesus. He simply went out and did what he’s been doing for years. Now, does scoring for Al Nassr automatically mean he should start every game for Portugal? No. Those are two different questions. But if you’re going to tell me Cristiano has nothing left to offer Portugal, you need to explain what you mean. Are we saying he cannot score? The evidence says otherwise. Are we saying he cannot contribute experience, leadership and an understanding of what it takes to perform under pressure? That’s difficult to defend. Portugal absolutely needs to prepare for a future without Cristiano. Every generation eventually moves on, and young players must develop their own identities. But you don’t prepare for the future by treating the past as if it was a mistake. Cristiano helped turn Portugal into a global attraction and inspired an entire generation of Portuguese footballers. That history doesn’t disappear because a coach makes a different selection. Jorge Jesus can disagree with him, challenge him or leave him out. That’s the manager’s decision. But he must understand the player he’s dealing with. Cristiano has spent his entire career responding to doubt. Every time people thought he was finished, he found another way to score. And now, after all the discussion about his future with Portugal, he scores again for Al Nassr. You can question Cristiano Ronaldo’s role in your team, but don’t confuse a change in his role with the end of his ability.
