If you fold your clothes and towels as they come out of the dryer (literally at the dryer folding and making little piles on the top of the dryer) you’ll never have a pile of laundry to fold. That’s a tip I learned from someone on tiktok. She made it her rule and she stuck to it for decades. Only takes a few extra mins.

I would maybe put a corner shelf where those clothes were so you can continue to put the kids stuff on there. so they know that is there shelf and stuff that needs to be put away. It may help everyone. Maybe make a day that it has to be done. Baseboards are done when I can. They are so neglected lol
