The moment Griffith realized that his dream is being obstruct by his "friendship" with Guts I think is the major reason that made him sacrifice the band of the hawk, I mean imagine you had a goal then you meet someone and without you even realizing that the dream you once told yourself to pursue by all means no longer hold the same meaning in your mind if that person is not there. What do you do? All in all I tried to showcase the side of the friend who's "hating " because you are living them But in the Manga the answer I'd to completely sacrifice your own feelings and them(friend(s)) so that you only have your dreams in your heart That's what Griffith did and he even went to see guts just to check/confirm his current feelings/attitude towards him after the eclipse
