huh? A book being against his philosophy doesn't necessarily mean he can't enjoy it or think it makes an interesting point. Maybe I'm not understanding something

I had a Librarian tell me that 20% of the books you read should go against your point of view. You should read books that challenge you and cause you to be uncomfortable. I'm glad he recommended the book.

it reminds me of how his list for his top music is obviously crap to connect with a younger "woke" audience

Could he not just appreciate or respect the perspective of the book without necessarily endorsing it? I read No Country for Old Men but I don't necessarily agree with the messaging, yk?

does poc and black people being in positions of power matter if they keep perpetuating the systems that kept them further away from those positions?

I don’t think it’s either! This isn’t the first time he’s recommended a piece of media that critiques the American empire. I think in this instance he understands the novel’s arguments about complacency and thinks “yes, this is so true, that is why I am not complacent, I’ve dedicated my life to trying to change things.” He’s one of many career politicians who may have gotten into the game with more radical ideas and don’t realize they’ve become part of the establishment and power structure. Like a police captain who wanted to “change things from the inside” and thinks he’s radically reformed the system because he’s mandated bodycams and stops his officers from beating up their interrogation subjects.

Wouldn’t that be a good reason to put on there? If the books shows just how terrible a society that clashes with his political idealogy can be, wouldn’t he want to push that?

Could also be cognitive dissonance on his end too. Excellent analysis as always.

It reminds me a lot of him putting Parasite on his must watch films of 2019. My truest guess is that he doesn’t make those lists at all and some assistant or staffer more or less just cobbles it together with whatever other media has current cultural valence

Or if you read the book and liked it and thought maybe the people should also read this so they can think about these things even if aspects of it, conflicted with the role of his work. Maybe that’s exactly why he put it on his list. For us to read and have discussions about this

i think a lot of the politicians that post about "favorite x of this year" are just making lists of popular things

I honestly don't think he curated those lists tbh. but I feel like bourgeoisie don't consider themselves to be a part of that dystopia, like how people responded to parasite

Not everyone reads books to understand what the author is trying to tell the reader. Some people can just read and enjoy the story without wondering about any deeper meaning.
