They got a call about a car that had slammed into a tree. Officer Davis pulled up around 1:35 a.m. He spotted a red 2017 Honda Accord that had veered off the road. The car sat stuck in the woods, roughly 150 feet from the pavement. Soon, the officers learned the driver was Alexiss Garza. She told them straight up that she had been texting her ex when the crash happened. They led her to an ambulance nearby. First responders checked her out there. While talking to her inside the ambulance, Officer Davis smelled alcohol on her breath. He saw other signs she might be impaired too. He ran the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus test. Then he had her say part of the alphabet and count backward. All those checks pointed to her being under the influence. They asked Alexiss to step out and do field sobriety tests. She paused at first, but then she tried the Walk and Turn and One Leg Stand. After watching her, the officers decided she was too impaired to drive. They arrested her for DWI. They took Alexiss to the Berkeley Township Police Department for more steps. Her car got towed and held for 12 hours under John's Law. Back at the station, they read her the standard statement for drivers. She agreed to give breath samples. The Alcotest showed her blood alcohol level at 0.101%. That's over the 0.08% limit. Once the paperwork wrapped up, officers drove her to her grandfather's house. He signed the Potential Liability Warning form for her. They let her go into his care until court. Alexiss got these traffic tickets: Operating under the influence (39:4-50) Reckless driving (39:4-96) Careless driving (39:4-97) Traffic on marked lanes (39:4-88b) Use of hand-held wireless telephones (39:4-97.3) Court files show Alexiss had a prior arrest for criminal trespass (2C:18-3B) in Seaside Heights, New Jersey, on August 28, 2022.
