When I was in college I had a peer that was from Vietnam. She spoke some English and I noticed every day that she brought a banana as a snack. I thought she was so chic and classy. Once the semester was almost over I got to know her more through a group project. I told her I admired her for eating fruit cuz I ate trash all the time. She admitted to me that she doesn’t even like bananas.. it was just the easiest thing to grab at the grocery store that rang up as a bundle so she didn’t have to search anything up on the check out screen.. she said she would much rather have apples but the different choices intimidated her 😭😭 i was in shambles! Our group took her to the store after study and showed her how to get her fav apples ❤️

When I first move to USA I would buy 5 cheeseburgers they were 1$ each. In my home country McDonald was a luxury. It made me so happy being able to have it everyday

I once went to a grocery store and asked them to heat my pasta for me. I didn't know pasta salad was a thing. Lady looked at me all weird. Went back to the dorm and ate it on the floor crying because it was such a hard couple weeks for me

When I was sick for the first time while dating my bf, he made me sinigang (a sour Filipino soup). It was my first time having it and I cried because I was very ill and just wanted familiar food. Looking back, he was making me the most comforting, nourishing food he thought of. I wish I was more grateful for that at the time

In college a guy from Vietnam got up the courage to take a city bus to get a pillow after days without one in college dorms. But he didn’t know how to find the bus back, so he just rode it it around for 3 hours til it looped. We told him to come get us next time and we’d help him get what he needed

the one time I had to navigate the transportation at jfk (I’m born and raised in the US) and was frustrated and started crying then I realized immigrants who don’t know the language do it all the time everyone is so brave 😭😭

When I moved to the US and first went grocery shopping it was SO hard because you just don’t know hardly any of the brands so you’re stressing out over what’s good and what’s terrible so the first few months it’s just trial and error and I don’t even want to know how much money I wasted on terrible food, weird toiletries and all that 😭

I moved to the US last December, I’m 25. I feel like a lost child all the time. I lack the entire life experience I need in order to be befriended by anyone. I don’t know what brands of things are good, I don’t really know how to be relatable to people. I came here to give my daughter a better life but I can’t even give her a good Halloween because I’ve never gone trick or treating in my life and don’t know where people go. It makes me so sad.

My bf was an orphan at nine years old so he went to boarding school cus not even his grandparents wanted to take care of him cus he was super naughty (he just had adhd)zand he had adhd meds that made him so hungry that he rummaged through the trash for food 😔😔 I balled my eyes out. However, he’s okay now and is a lawyer and eats well🥺🩵

Being an immigrant is so scary, i remember my first time going to the grocery store and gas station and didn't know what to do, we have cashier and gas personnel in our country we are literally princess over there, adjusting is very hard but im trying 😭.
