Beltane 🔥 Beltane is the Celtic version of May Day, and a festival that celebrates the peak of fertility & the rebirth of nature. In the ancient tradition, large community bonfires were lit at the tops of hills and animals were passed tbrough the flames to bring protection. Handfastings, one of the oldest forms of marriages, were held, and brides were adorned with apple and hawthorn blossom. Ritualistic fertility dances often took place, and couples would make love underneatg silver birth trees. Beltane was renowned for being a night when the faery folk would cause mischief, and so many would protect themselves by wearing garments of green & white, or carrying hawthorn and rowan wood. In many parts of Britain, these old traditions are still alive such as with the Edinburgh Beltane Fire Festival, however most have now blended with European May Day customs. May Day is also a festival that celebrates fertility, love & nature, and was brought over to Britain by the Anglo-Saxons where it blended with Beltane customs. Dancing around a maypole is a fertility dance, with the pole representing a male phallus & the crown of flowers on top the vaginal entrance. A May Queen & King are crowned. Representing the balance between masculine & feminine that is needed for the world to thrive. The May Queen is likely a blend of older pagan fertility goddesses, such as Brigid, Freya & Flora, and today is celebrated ny making flower crowns & decorating with garlands. Which festival will you be celebrating tomorrow? ❤️🔥🌸 #beltane #mayday #maypole #fertilityrituals #paganism
