𝐓𝐑𝐀𝐈𝐍𝐒 𝐃𝐎'𝐍𝐓 𝐒𝐓𝐀𝐘 𝐎𝐍 𝐓𝐑𝐀𝐂𝐊𝐒 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐖𝐀𝐘 𝐘𝐎𝐔 𝐓𝐇𝐈𝐍𝐊 𝐓𝐇𝐄𝐘 𝐃𝐎 Train wheels look like they're just gliding along two rails from above. Get underneath, though, and you can see the real engineering at work. Unlike ordinary car wheels, railway wheels have slightly tapered running surfaces with a raised flange along the inner edge. Combined with the fixed axle linking each wheel pair, this shape lets the train self-center as it travels — steering itself down the track without much outside help. That flange isn't meant to scrape against the rail constantly. Most of the steering happens through the wheel-and-rail geometry alone. The flange only kicks in as a backup when sideways movement gets big enough to need extra correction. What's wild is how minimal this system looks given the forces involved — individual railcars weighing tens of tons, balanced on steel wheels touching the rail across surprisingly small contact points. Get a camera just inches from that contact point, though, and the whole interaction suddenly looks a lot more intense. 𝙵𝚘𝚕𝚕𝚘𝚠 @𝚑𝚒𝚜𝚝𝚘𝚛𝚢𝚌𝚘𝚙𝚑𝚎𝚛𝚎𝚍 𝚏𝚘𝚛 𝚖𝚘𝚛𝚎 💗💗 #History #facts #trains #military #war
