I see curing cancer like curing a bruise.

Thank you! There is no single cure for cancers. They can be so different.

As someone with Stage III B cervical cancer, thank you! Everything I tell, thinks I’ll be fine in like a year, because their xyz acquaintance had some OTHER cancer but I’m much more likely to die. My cancer is AGGRESSIVE.

I also think it helps to have some understanding of what cancer is: a biological “mistake” essentially, as well it what’s it not: a disease. Cancers happen in many ways and places in the body and at various times from birth to any age after that - but most cancers started as a cellular mistake that didn’t get caught during normal cell growth and repair processes. This is contrast to pathogens like viruses or bacteria or fungi where we have a clear non-human cell to target for treatments. It’s much more difficult to research and treat human cellular “mistakes” that lead to uncontrolled cell growth than it is to develop treatments for diseases with targets that are non-human cells. That’s partly why we have more antibiotics and antivirals and anti fungals than we have adequate treatments for the many many types of cancers that exist.

This is such an important distinction. I think the way that cancer is talked about is so often misleading. We think of it as this big general evil with sub-categories. In reality it's more like an umbrella term, and you have to talk about each cancer as its own disease.

Obviously suffering and dying prematurely early is awful (speaking as a cancer survivor), but dying at an old age of cancer just means that you outlived every other mode of death such as CVD & traumatic accident. I hope to live long enough to get cancer again! I just hope I’m like 90 or something by then

Its why some cancers, like prostate and thyroid cancer, have a near 100% survival rate after five years. Some cancers like brain, lung, and stomach cancer have a survival rate of less than 40%. The treatment for prostate cancer isn't going to work for all cancers, but at close to 100%, its pretty close to a cure.

This is pertinent to me because my mom currently has TWO DIFFERENT stage 4 cancers and people really cannot comprehend how complicated it is to treat. Even my mom is confused by it. She doesn’t have one disease. She has two.

I remember when I was at university in about 2010 I was on an interview panel conducted by a big new paper about a cancer research fund raiser. The question was “how close are we to a cure for cancer?” I answered it’s like asking “how close are we to a cure for virus?”

The general public aren't doctors . People assume that they know more about things than they do. I'm definitely not a doctor, but I'm proud to say that I need doctors and sciences to make the decisions on the things that I don't understand.

as someone getting their phd in biology that works in a cancer pharm lab, this! people think of cancer as one disease with one cure. in reality, it has so many different causes. a single tumor can have multiple cells with multiple types of resistance to therapeutics

Yup and each cancer is heterogenous, meaning it presents differently in each person, even if it's the same type of cancer. Thats why not everyone responds to current standard of care treatments. The best that could be done is more effective treatments for different subtypes. (For reference I worked in cancer research for 5 years and now study medicine)

If its a class of diseases, cancer is a disease. Both can be true at the same time. Science isn't either or.
