The Octopus Who Taught Us to Belong: A True Story from the Great African Seaforest In the cold kelp forests off South Africa, there is a place of emerald light and ancient silence known as the Great African Seaforest. It is here that a filmmaker named Craig Foster began a daily ritual: diving into the freezing water without a wetsuit, simply to observe, to learn, and to be present. For a year, he returned to the same rocky den to visit a single common octopus. He spent two hours following her daily. He made a deliberate choice not to give her a human name. She was not a pet or possession to be claimed. She was a wild creature of profound intelligence. By leaving her unnamed, he offered the highest form of respect—honoring her as she was: a sovereign life of the sea. She was simply, and perfectly, "the octopus." At first, she was wary. But as the days turned into weeks, and the weeks into months, a remarkable trust began to form. She reached out her tentacles and gently explored his hand, tasting his skin with her suckers. She allowed him to follow her through her world—to witness her hunt, to watch her morph her skin into the texture of seaweed, and to reveal behaviors that were completely new to science. "The octopus showed me many behaviors that were completely new to science, because this animal trusted me," Foster later reflected. Their bond was tested when a pyjama shark attacked her. She lost an arm, clinging to life. When she finally emerged from her den, scarred but alive, she came back to him. She allowed him to hold her as she breathed. In time, as is the quiet, ancient way of her kind, she mated, laid a clutch of eggs, and began to waste away, dedicating her final energy to guarding her legacy. The story of their time together became the Oscar-winning documentary My Octopus Teacher, directed by Pippa Ehrlich and James Reed. As Ehrlich noted, audiences resonated with "parts of the story that are universal to almost every person on Earth: love and friendship and connection and hope. This is deeply encouraging... it demonstrates that despite all the environmental challenges we face, human beings continue to resonate with the awe and wonder of nature." But perhaps the most profound lesson was the one the octopus taught Craig Foster about our place in the natural world. "What she taught me is to feel that you are part of this place," Foster said. "Not a visitor. And that's a huge difference." It is a difference that changes everything. We are not merely passing through this planet; we are woven into its fabric. At Buddypaws, we believe every life deserves to be seen, loved, and protected—not as a possession, but as a fellow traveler on this extraordinary planet.
