After the online war with South Africans, it looks like Kenyan social media users have found a new target, and this time, the artillery is headed to the United States. Newsmax anchor Rob Finnerty has found himself at the centre of the latest online storm after making remarks comparing New York City to Nairobi during a segment discussing immigration and urban conditions in America. Finnerty reportedly argued that the influx of immigrants was making some American cities look “more like Nairobi than New York City.” The comment did not go down well with Kenyans, many of whom questioned why Nairobi had been dragged into a conversation that had little to do with Kenya. And just like that, the online spotlight shifted. Kenyans began flooding Finnerty’s social media pages and Newsmax’s platforms, challenging his remarks and sharing pictures of Nairobi’s skyline, modern buildings and infrastructure. For many, the issue was not simply about comparing two cities. It was about what they saw as an outdated stereotype being used to portray Nairobi as a symbol of urban decline. So, after the online exchanges with South Africans, the question now is whether Rob Finnerty knows just how seriously Kenyans take their capital when they feel it has been unfairly portrayed. The artillery, at least on social media, appears to have found a new direction.
