I remember this time so vividly. I was 25 years old, expecting my second child and I got a phone call that changed my life. Out of the blue, “I’m sorry, we’re gonna have to let you go.” I had no savings and fell onto my bed facing the ceiling, getting hot and cold flushes thinking: “What am I going to do?” It was in that moment I turned to Allah in desperation and got to work. I had no backup plan so whatever I came up with, I just had to make it work… Looking back, I genuinely think it was one of the greatest things that could have happened to me. I had nowhere to hide. There was no comfortable salary coming at the end of the month. I had a family depending on me and another child on the way. So I started trying things. Building things. Making calls. Learning new skills. Finding ways to make money because failure suddenly had consequences beyond myself. And somehow, that pressure pulled things out of me that comfort never had. Ideas I probably would never have acted on. Risks I probably would never have taken. A level of resourcefulness I didn’t know I had. And most importantly, a reliance upon Allah I probably wouldn’t have developed if everything remained comfortable. I haven't been employed since. And some of the things I built during that period still benefit my family today. At the time I genuinely thought my life was falling apart. I had no idea Allah was using that moment to completely change its direction. Sometimes the thing you’re begging Allah to remove is developing something inside you that you’ll need for the next stage of your life. That doesn’t make hardship easy. And when you’re in the middle of it, you probably won’t understand why it’s happening. I definitely didn’t. But looking back six years later, I see it completely differently. Getting fired forced me to wake up. It forced me to become creative. It forced me to take responsibility. It forced me to trust Allah and get to work. And it taught me something I’ve carried ever since. Sometimes Allah allows your Plan A to disappear because you would never have discovered what you were capable of whilst it was still there.
