@witnwisdomappstyle: Did you know the Scots-Irish played an important role in one of the American Revolution’s most important battles in the South? By the time of the Revolution, thousands of Scots-Irish families had settled throughout the Southern backcountry and Appalachian frontier. They were farmers, hunters, and militia members who were used to defending their communities. In 1780, British Major Patrick Ferguson threatened the backcountry settlements that refused to support the Crown. So the mountain men answered. In September, Patriot militia gathered at Sycamore Shoals, then crossed the mountains to confront Ferguson. Among their leaders was William Campbell, a Scots-Irish Virginian who would command the Patriot forces at Kings Mountain. On October 7, 1780, they met Ferguson’s Loyalists at Kings Mountain in South Carolina. The Patriot militia won a decisive victory, killing Ferguson and defeating his force. And here’s what I love about this story: These weren’t professional soldiers coming from far away. They were frontier farmers, hunters, and neighbors—many descended from the Scots-Irish who had made their homes in the Southern mountains. At Kings Mountain, those backcountry communities helped change the course of the Revolution. #ScotsIrish #AppalachianHistory #AmericanRevolution #KingsMountain #AppalachianHistory
