With employer contributions, over 18 years a parent would invest $45k for their kid and the bottom line projections would be a payout of $173k up to $303k at age 18… Not sure how anyone is mad at that. Even if you never added anything past the $1k starting gift, your kid would have $2800-$5500 at 18, which is a better start than most 18 year olds these days.
