🌸 HAWTHORN DEITY 🌸 Did you know that most ancient cultures created personification for trees? They believed that every tree had a spirit or being that dwelt inside, protecting and guarding it. In fact, the act of knocking on wood was born as a way to call upon the tree spirit and ask them for protection and good luck. In British & airish mythology, certain trees have protective attributes and can bring good luck and fortune. The hawthorn is one very such tree, often planted near homes or carried for protection and luck. When I carried this piece with me across the seas it felt like I was continuing the ancient ways of our ancestors, and bringing to life the old traditions and customs that once played a large role in older communities. Thankfully, this little branch here had already been half torn off in a recent storm, so I dodnt anger the fae folk by cutting it off. Some of it was still green, but most of it was starting to season in the heat of the May sun. It had already been smoothed down by the elements, leaving this perfect section where my mind instantly saw a figure looking back at me. After a week of slowly sanding it down, drilling a hole in the top and sketching out the figure, I was ready to Woodburn into it, bringing to life the spirit of the hawthorn. The result is a piece of hawthorn that feels almost like a wand, as it fits so perfectly in my hand. The deity gives off an aura of tranquillity, adding to that protective element associated with the hawthorn. If you are out on a walk down an old track or into the woods, perhaps try and spy a small branch or a piece of wood that feels as though it could be brought to life.
