@grammygbear: Did you know? The "Mexican Period" of New Mexico only lasted 27 years, but it defined who we are today. 🇲🇽➡️🇺🇸 We often hear debates about labels—Spanish, Hispano, Chicano, Mexican—but history tells a powerful story of a people who stayed put while borders moved over them. Here is a quick look at the history of OUR people in New Mexico: * THE MEXICAN ERA (1821–1848) 🔓 When Mexico won independence from Spain in 1821, we all became Mexican citizens. It was a short but explosive time. * The Doors Opened: Spain had banned trade with the US, but Mexico opened the Santa Fe Trail, bringing new goods (and new problems) from Missouri. * The 1837 Chimayó Revolt: We’ve always been independent. When a Mexican governor tried to impose unfair taxes, the "Rio Arriba" (northern rebels) revolted, beheaded him, and installed a local governor, José González. * THE TRAUMA OF 1848 ⚔️ The US Army marched into Santa Fe in 1846, but the transition wasn't as peaceful as some history books claim. * The Taos Revolt (1847): Locals and Pueblo allies fought back to keep their independence, killing the new US Governor, Charles Bent. The revolt was brutally crushed at the Taos Pueblo church. * The Broken Promise: The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo (1848) promised that Mexican citizens who stayed would keep their land and rights. The US government famously failed to keep that word. * THE "SPANISH" SURVIVAL STRATEGY (1880s–1950s) 🛡️ Why do so many of us say "Spanish" instead of "Mexican"? It was a survival tactic. * After 1848, New Mexicans faced massive racism from the East. To gain statehood (which took 64 years!) and avoid anti-Mexican prejudice, leaders emphasized "Spanish" conquistador heritage. * Meanwhile, the Santa Fe Ring of corrupt lawyers used the legal system to strip our families of millions of acres of community land grants. * RECLAIMING THE LAND & IDENTITY (1960s) ✊🏽 By the 1960s, a new generation said "Basta!" * Tierra Amarilla: In 1967, Reies López Tijerina and La Alianza raided the courthouse in T.A. to arrest the District Attorney and demand the return of stolen land grants. * This era sparked a revival of pride in our unique culture, our "Manito" dialect, and our history. THE BOTTOM LINE: Whether you call yourself Mexican, Hispano, or Chicano, our history is one of resilience. We didn't cross the border—the border crossed us. 📍 Which village or land grant does your family come from? #NewMexicoHistory #NMCulture #LandGrants #ChicanoHistory #NewMexicoTrue New Mexico History and Everything Land of Enchantment
