I am a woman, and I refuse to believe that my freedom should ever be negotiable. I am somebody — NOT some body. My body is not property, an object, or a tool for anyone else. Women have fought for generations for the right to vote, work, learn, speak, lead, love, and simply exist freely. And yet, around the world, women are still being stripped of those rights. In Afghanistan, women and girls face restrictions on education, employment, movement and public life, with rules requiring male accompaniment and even restricting women’s voices in public. And here, we are still teaching women how not to be raped instead of teaching men not to rape. Watch your drink. Carry your keys. Don’t walk alone. Share your location. Why is the responsibility always placed on us? Teach your sons: No means no. Consent is not optional. Women’s bodies do not belong to you. Look at the Cornell 7. Jane Doe alleges she was drugged and gang-raped by seven men. No criminal charges were initially brought, but was stated that some of the men were given the opportunity to mitigate their punishment through essays. An essay. For alleged sexual violence.  And this is exactly why we are angry. We are done living in fear. Done accepting excuses. Done shrinking ourselves to make the world more comfortable. Women deserve autonomy, safety, equality, justice and a voice — everywhere. We will not submit. We will speak. We will fight.
