According to court records, Kenai Logun Kelley allegedly shook the infant by his legs, dropped him face-first onto a hardwood floor and used the baby’s own hands to hit him in the head. Doctors later discovered severe bleeding and swelling in the baby’s brain, retinal hemorrhaging and multiple fractured ribs. Authorities responded to the couple’s home on July 28 after receiving a report of an injured infant. First responders reportedly found the baby cold, unresponsive and making grunting sounds. He was initially taken to Cox South Hospital before being airlifted to St. Louis Children’s Hospital, where he underwent emergency neurosurgery. Investigators say Kelley initially denied harming his son before admitting that he had been too rough with him. He allegedly demonstrated some of his actions using a doll and told investigators the baby went limp afterward. Kelley also reportedly acknowledged that he was angry during the incident and was the only person caring for the child when the injuries occurred. The baby’s mother, 19-year-old Starr Mariah Vesey, is accused of failing to seek prompt medical attention despite noticing concerning symptoms.
