Here’s what it actually looks like when a massive storm hits an offshore oil rig. 🌊⛈️ Huge waves are crashing against the structure, the wind is going crazy, and the entire rig can feel like it’s moving underneath you. So how do offshore workers actually survive conditions like this? I’m a year into FIFO offshore, so let me show you what really happens. First, these rigs aren't just sitting in the middle of the ocean hoping the weather gets better. They're engineered and operated with severe weather conditions in mind. Some offshore structures are fixed to the seabed on massive foundations, while floating units are designed to move with the ocean rather than simply trying to resist every wave. But when a serious storm approaches, the procedures change immediately. Loose equipment gets secured, non-essential work can be stopped, and crews are moved away from exposed areas into designated safe locations. You’re not going to see workers casually walking around the deck while extreme conditions are hitting. And here’s something people don't realize — when operations are shut down because of weather, your offshore rotation doesn't necessarily just stop. Depending on your contract, you may continue receiving your normal pay while you're onboard, with accommodation, meals, and onboard facilities still available. Some installations even have gyms, recreation areas, cinemas, and games rooms — although exactly what’s available depends on the rig. And yes, offshore careers can pay six figures, but $100K, $150K, or $200K isn't guaranteed for every worker. Your pay depends heavily on your role, experience, qualifications, location, employer, and contract. So here's the question: Would you trust an offshore rig to ride out a massive storm in the middle of the ocean? Let me know in the comments. Follow this page for more offshore career content, like this video, and if you're serious about getting into offshore work, check out the website in my bio for the step-by-step guide.
