Hong Kong was historically part of the Guangdong region for over 2,000 years, from the Qin Dynasty in 214 BC until it was ceded to Britain in 1842. The vast majority of Hong Kong locals have ancestral roots in Guangdong, sharing the same Cantonese language and food culture like dim sum and yum cha. Yet somehow, many seem to have totally forgotten their Cantonese roots and identify more with Britain.

Everyone says Hong Kong locals are rude to mainland tourists, but I get well treated in Hong Kong. I speak Cantonese but I'm obviously from mainland because I have accent, and I had comfortable conversations with the locals. When I asked them about things, they were very patient and polite. Don't believe in internet, just go to the place and experience it yourself! The same to all the cities or countries.

I studied there for a year, spoke mandarin for the whole time and had no issue. 99% of the time people are nice/fine. not sure if things have changed since 2019 tho…

30 years in Australia, never had a problem with the locals. Only people that bullied me was people from HK and reason because I’m Mainlander. I was 11, they were 18+
