@dralexgeorge: Adhd people are trying to avoid work, get on benefits and are lazy. Is that actually true?

I always said I don’t want a label - I want a lifeline. Undiagnosed ADHD has completely destroyed my life and since starting the medication (it’s still early days) I’ve felt such a massive relief 🙏 thank you for posting these videos!

Many of us with adhd have had more jobs than roast dinners. It’s keeping them that’s the issue 😂

Can I add also the main articles I’ve seen are specifically about PIP, which is not an unemployment benefit. It is to help with additional costs of having a disability. The bbc writes it “does not come with a requirement to seek work” like it pays enough to not work??? Weekly pay doesn’t even cover a days work I don’t think. It’s so frustrating the way media frames stuff deliberately to make it sound like people are claiming it like an unemployment benefit. That is simply not liveable or true. I’m not sure the stats on other benefits but we can’t forget that any with any stat about universal credit around 40% of people on UC are in work it just doesn’t pay enough or they can’t work more due to caring responsibilities etc!!

I do think it’s quite nuanced. There will be people who abuse the system, there always will be. But for the most part people who are neurodivergent genuinely are struggling in a society that’s not adapted to them.

Diagnose at 48, I have worked since I was 14!! I got a diagnosis because I saw how well my daughter did on medication, she is 17 and also has a job and college. I’m only on month one of medication and can’t believe how much it’s helping me.

Imagine if work places would just put reasonable adjustments in place for audhd people without becoming toxic

It’s already hard enough to accept receiving a diagnosis, especially when you are diagnosed late.. there is so much grief that comes with it. This rhetoric in the media and politics rn only makes me feel worse about accepting that I do struggle, I am different and need extra help. It’s making me feel so invalidated in the struggles that I experience everyday. I wish I could do things more easily and I want to do all the things that everyone else does. I am trying. People have no clue what it’s like for your whole life to be dominated by adhd/ autism

Have these people actually tried getting benefits for adhd? Trying to get the basic support and medication is near enough impossible let alone anything else

I am nearly 50 and worked all my life, at the moment, without the diagnosis I am struggling to work 4 days a week - 5 hours a day and I have to sleep for 3 days straight, the 3 days I don’t work I sleep! Is this a life? I can’t function anymore I am so sad and so broken and no one is helping

It’s not a tiny percentage, it is a very large percentage of people going on unemployment benefits soon after receiving a diagnosis

How to the accessors know genuine cases from the TikTokers that want a label and like you say some just don’t want to work?! There must be a number of people unfairly using the funding that should be used on genuine cases surely and clogging the waiting list up. I was diagnosed at 57 with combined ADHD and won’t be claiming PIP or requesting medication I just needed to know. I now need to wait until April 2027 for a ASD assessment!

Are you saying it’s the medication that’s helped? Or the diagnosis? Or both, possibly? X

I love this narrative because I literally missed out on benefits I was entitled to for YEARS because my condition limited me from even starting the process
