Building an app with AI is faster than ever… but shipping fast doesn’t automatically mean shipping securely. 🤖🔐 Tools like Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, Lovable and Replit can help you build working apps incredibly quickly, but AI-generated code still needs the same security controls, testing and review as code written manually. If anything, moving faster makes it even more important to know what to check before you put an app in front of real users. ⚠️ One of the biggest mistakes is exposing secrets. 🔑 API keys, database credentials, service tokens and private configuration should never live inside frontend code or be committed to a public repository. Keep secrets server-side, use environment variables or a proper secrets manager, restrict permissions and rotate anything that may have been exposed. Authentication is another area you should never simply assume is correct. 👤 Logging in is only half the job. Your application also needs proper authorisation so users can only access the data and actions they are actually allowed to access. Admin routes, APIs and database operations should enforce permissions on the server, not just hide buttons in the interface. Your database needs protection too. 🗄️ If you’re using platforms such as Supabase, review your Row Level Security policies carefully. Test what an authenticated user, another user and an unauthenticated visitor can actually read, create, edit or delete. Never assume the generated configuration is safe by default. Then look at your APIs. 🌐 Add rate limiting, authentication, request validation and sensible usage limits. Otherwise an exposed endpoint could potentially be abused, spammed or used to generate unexpected infrastructure or AI API costs. Validate everything coming from the user. 🛡️ Treat form fields, URLs, uploaded files, query parameters and API payloads as untrusted input. Use server-side validation, sanitise where appropriate, parameterise database queries and restrict file types, sizes and destinations. Dependencies matter as well. 📦 AI tools can generate code using libraries you didn’t consciously choose. Review what has been installed, keep packages updated, remove unused dependencies and run vulnerability scanning before deployment. And don’t forget visibility. 👀 Add structured logging, error monitoring, alerts and audit trails so suspicious behaviour doesn’t remain invisible. Combine that with automated tests, backups and a recovery plan. Security isn’t just preventing an incident, it’s also detecting and recovering from one quickly. A good AI development workflow should look more like: 💡 Generate 🔍 Review 🧪 Test 🔐 Security check 📊 Monitor 🚀 Deploy 🔁 Improve AI can help you build the first 80% incredibly quickly. The final 20% is where reliability, security and production readiness are won. Vibe code if you want.
