As of September 2026, Jupiter officially has 115 known moons. It is a very diverse system: four of these moons — Io, Europa, Ganymede, and Callisto — were called the Galilean moons because they were discovered by Galileo Galilei in 1610. Io is the most volcanically active world in the Solar System: its interior is constantly heated by the powerful tidal interactions of Jupiter and the other moons. Europa is covered in an icy shell, likely harboring a global ocean of liquid water, making it one of the most promising places to support life. Ganymede is the most robust moon in the Solar System, with a diameter even larger than that of Mercury and its own magnetic field. Callisto is significantly farther from Jupiter, its ancient, layered surface radiating impact craters, and liquid water may also accumulate beneath the surface. In addition to these four large worlds, Jupiter has smaller major satellites — Metis, Adrastea, Amalthea, and Thebe — associated with its ring system, as well as a vast number of distant irregular satellites. Most of these are very small, have elongated and highly inclined orbits, and many orbit Jupiter in a retrograde motion. Some of these objects form orbital groups — for example, the Ananke, Carme, Pasiphae, and Himalia groups — which could likely lead to the disruption of larger bodies. Therefore, the 115 satellites are not 115 identical moons: among them are enormous, massive worlds, icy bodies, a volcanic satellite, and numerous small asteroid-like objects. The entire Jupiter system actually resembles a compressed planetary system with its large worlds, rings, resonances, and numerous small bodies. Europa, Ganymede, and Callisto are currently being studied particularly actively: NASA and ESA have sent the Europa Clipper and JUICE missions to the Jupiter system to take a closer look at these icy moons and find out how modern their subsurface oceans might be for life. #solarsystem #jupiter #moon #facts
