Hi, I’m the original creator from the beginning. I found the video interesting, and there are some points I partially agree with. However, my main issue is the repeated use of “Africa” or “African countries” as though the continent were one country with a single economic experience. You need to be specific about which countries you’re referring to.
For example, the claim that African countries have made no efforts to industrialise is simply wrong, and Ghana is a clear counterexample.
Ghana has a long history of deliberate industrialisation efforts. Following independence in 1957, the government pursued industrialisation, investing in state-owned enterprises, manufacturing, processing industries, building materials and machinery. The World Bank documents how these policies initially helped Ghana’s manufacturing sector grow from around 2% of total output in 1957 to 9%.
Ghana adopted a National Industrial Policy in 2010, improving manufacturing capacity, productivity and product quality.
There is also measurable evidence of an existing manufacturing sector. World Bank data show that manufacturing accounted for approximately 10.6% of Ghana’s GDP in 2024, demonstrating that manufacturing is an established part of the economy, not something the country has made no effort to develop.
Now, I’m not arguing that Ghana has fully industrialised or that its industrial policies have been entirely successful But that is a very different argument from claiming that no efforts have been made.
The distinction is between attempting to industrialise, achieving sustained industrial growth, and successfully transforming an economy into a manufacturing powerhouse. These are three different things.
If your argument is that particular countries have struggled to industrialise, name those countries specifically.
