For years, the tattoo industry was often shaped by exclusivity. Many established shops were dominated by tight-knit circles that gave few opportunities to newcomers, and inexperienced artists were frequently dismissed as “scratchers” rather than mentored. OG POPPY set out to challenge that culture. By opening the wildly popular Da Kandy Shop, he created a space where aspiring artists—especially those from underrepresented communities—could learn, practice, and develop their craft in a supportive environment. Instead of gatekeeping knowledge, he believed in sharing it, helping artists build confidence, portfolios, and careers. Many of the tattoo artists who trained or grew under his guidance have gone on to open their own studios or earn positions in respected tattoo shops. Through relentless passion, mentorship, and a commitment to creating opportunities, OG POPPY worked to leave the tattoo community stronger and more welcoming than he found it. #ogpoppy
