Southern California Braces for a Big One as Hurricane Rachel Approaches Southern California could be in for a rough weekend as Hurricane Rachel, now downgraded to a tropical storm, moves toward Baja California, bringing the potential for dangerous surf, strong winds, rain and coastal flooding. Although Rachel is not expected to directly strike Long Beach as a hurricane, its powerful swells could create dangerous conditions along Southern California beaches, especially Sunday, October 11. In Long Beach, concerns are growing for the already battered Peninsula, where recent powerful waves have caused significant erosion and damage. Forecasters predict high tides reaching approximately 7.5 feet Sunday, combined with dangerous surf, increasing the risk of additional erosion and coastal flooding. The City of Long Beach has already activated additional sandbag distribution sites as a precaution. Residents can pick up sand and sandbags at Fire Stations 7, 12, 13 and 14, as well as the Claremont Beach Parking Lot, through Tuesday. Residents must bring identification and are limited to 10 bags per person. A Coastal Flood Advisory remains in effect through Tuesday afternoon as officials urge residents in vulnerable coastal areas to prepare.
