It does make sense now... ingat tak dulu zaman millennials we used to read blogs and write blogs. Basically we READ things everyday and LET IT ALL OUT everyday walaupun just benda kecik macam pergi kelas, pergi mall. Nowadays everything is about watching and recording videos. Less reading..

i once read a research about the accuracy of regulating our emotions using a second language, and honestly it's mind blowing.

my 20 cents as linguistics and literature student. when i first enrolled i was one of the few who got baited by “why would you do with this degree” but seeing the society today, particularly the growing children now, i figured the reasons why speech delay is something that’s very concerning. when children language development (which i believe, the core express language for human, in this case, the children language development is at the verge of declining, this would affect their daily life) when kids couldnt express what they feel, they would opt for physical language which include expressing with their body, now turned into behaviour. i agree with what you say on the behaviour part, language is powerful, especially on children who’s still developing. language is something that divinely equipped but it still has to be learned, understood and acquired. when human couldnt communicate well and effectively their emotions would override their behaviour. this is the same thing as when someone bottled up their emotions and find no way to express it, it would affect them internally (mentally) but now, the situation has changed causing people to act with physical language i.e. violence (idk if im making sense on this one but this is how i personally feels!!!)

you are right. brain rot contents and the result to lower attention span. also, both parents working and kids have no one to talk to at home. i am in almost 40 but during my time at school, kids who are rebellious are kids that had no one to talk to at home.

this has always been on my mind. personally, i think one of the reasons is because how people are so judgmental even towards kids these days, it's as if they're projecting themselves onto the younglings thus the kids wouldn't dare to speak out which then leads to the emotions bottling up. besides, many harmful and dangerous examples are being fed to them through media without monitoring. dulu yes kita may be cringe but that's what mold us into who we are now, but some of these kids don't even get the same chance of development

I can definitely see that. I think it also correlates with parenting styles; sure, I won't blame it on all parents nowadays, but it has been an uphill trend of parents being exposed for not educating their children properly. Kids are more impulsive because they are not being reinforced or punished for negative behaviour. We keep seeing "oh biasala budak-budak" when they should be corrected instead. Even teachers are not equipped with the power to correct these children. On a more related note, its also because kids are just exposed to too much non-literature media. Short forms, buzzwords, and slangs are too integrated into their surroundings hence the lower literacy rate. Hence, the potential misbehaviour as explained in the video.

in therapy, the ability to regulate emotions comes from our skill to recognise what we're feeling. so yes, when u don't know what you're feeling (u dont have the word for it), emotional regulation becomes difficult.

Agreed, I think emotional regulation is heavily influenced by our literacy level & ability to express ourselves. By not expressing ourselves, we keep these emotions bottled up and without a healthy way to express them, we may reach a tipping point and resort to more extreme & violent behaviours. Plus, emotional regulation is very important for our mental health, without it we can be more susceptible to having anxiety and depression

I feel like even if we made adults sit for the PISA exam, the results might end up being just as bad. Society nowadays reads less and less. Just look at NILAM programme in schools, instead of instilling a reading culture in their children, parents are now competing to see whose child can win, cheating the system and even “helping” by filling in their children’s NILAM records on their behalf 🫣

I feel like one of the many causes of this is the culture of adults silencing the youth from voicing out their emotions during conflict. Growing up, most of us are being told to 'jangan melawan' or 'jangan menjawab' orang tua hence why most of us have difficulties in expressing our feelings & thoughts. & like u said, after years of suppressing, sooner or later it will explode into harmful actions.

Entah la, kids sekarang dah terlalu biasa dengan instant gratification. Bosan? Scroll. Nak something? Semua nak cepat. Bila kena face real life, kena reject, fail, kecewa… haa mula laa tak tahu nak handle emosi sendiri. I guess parents sekarang terlalu nak protect anak daripada rasa susah dan kecewa, sampai tanpa sedar create masalah lain pulak.
