“At our country’s call, In peace and friendship, we'll live.” This is Uganda, which to me can be summed up in food, family, and the pursuit of dreams. I traveled to Kampala and captured what felt like home among Ugandans. On my quest, I posed a question: what is their favorite Ugandan experience? And I was flooded with just as many answers to my question as there are Ugandan dialects & dishes. My first encounter was a footballer called Haluna, who entertained the boda guys around Buganda Road Stage. He loved that Ugandans are avid supporters of their fellow countrymen’s dreams, like his, which is football. I was then lucky enough to meet a senior citizen named Given who was only 7 years old at the time of Uganda’s independence in 1962. And went on about how much change he's seen over the years. After which I crossed paths with another gentleman, an Allan. For him, amidst the struggles we unavoidably face as Ugandans, he has no other place he could possibly call home. So he decides to embrace it, even with all its flaws. But for me, Uganda would not be home without the most important thing, which is family! Where we come from, our roots, and our heritage are what make us. This reminded me to go check in on my grandma, whom I hadn’t seen in a while. She just turned 80 in August. And as we sat down to reminisce on when I was younger and how she encouraged me to step out of my bubble and talk to other kids, which in hindsight I believe she knew would teach me to share and be kind to one another. Because that is where true community begins through learning the value of friendship. I enjoyed my experience in the making of this video. It left me full of emotions of gratitude for being Ugandan and for the love we share in the small moments that connect us all as one. Thank you, CJs, Mwebaale nnyo, for the chance to experience this love of home through this challenge #thisisuganda #cjsuganda @cjs_256
