I wonder if the mother is on some type of medication that's making her mind confused. I was on hydromorphine for pain before and my attention span wasn't there. I also kept forgetting things. I had to tell my doctor to take me off the medication because I almost drove my wheelchair in front of a car. when I should have been up on the sidewalk.
