So I’m a freelance brand designer, and I have SO MANY thoughts. I reached out to offer advice (no reply) and then jokingly on DM say I won’t take a laptop but cold hard cash after they had taken the video down. They took it in good spirits but did mention they’re “not commissioning it” at the moment. Which really signals they weren’t looking to pay, and be serious about design/ brand and would happily exploit creatives. Happy they said sorry but intentions are intentions. When it comes to the designer in your comments, Im a freelancer and only do free/ discounted work if it’s friends, family or benefits me only (so no free work for brands). Every project I’ve done which I’ve not been paid for has been a portfolio piece which a brand can’t use for commercial gain. It’s all good saying you gain exposure and here’s a MacBook (apparently unboxed and used) - but it was very much targeted towards low income young designers. But the whole thing was just a one dimensional view of designers and what we do based on the story of the Nike swoosh, it was lazy and I always think hire others how you want to be hired.

I’m a freelance editor and a brand emailed me (!!) asking me to edit some footage for a chance to win a contract. In what world is that where we are at now. Luckily I’m in a position to say pay me or leave me out of it but I do worry for the less secure

I’m going to write something on switching up task based interviews for competency based interviews. I’ve just spent four days pulling together a PR strategy with execution and budget for an interview, when actually if they were to run a competency based interview on me they’d be able to go on that I was of that level.
