A one-year-old boy who miraculously survived nearly 11 minutes trapped underwater in Michigan just faced another frightening setback in a recovery his parents have been praying over for weeks. His name is Weston. Back in September, his mother, Carissa, suffered what the family believes was a seizure while driving. Her vehicle went into a pond with Weston inside. He was underwater for about 11 minutes before rescuers could reach him. His heart had stopped. It took 52 minutes of CPR before his pulse came back. Against every odd, Weston lived. He began opening his eyes. He came off the ventilator. After three weeks at Helen DeVos Children's Hospital, he was moved to Mary Free Bed to begin rehabilitation. His family called it a miracle. Then, just as that next chapter was beginning, he was rushed back by ambulance. Vomit had entered his lungs, and he was struggling to breathe. Doctors found he also had a respiratory virus. His fragile lungs were failing so badly that even the highest level of breathing support was not enough, and he had to be placed back on a ventilator. For parents who have already come so close to losing their son, it was another heartbreaking turn. Now, though, there is encouraging news. Weston's family says he was taken off the ventilator again, and his lungs are healing remarkably well. He is not out of the woods. Doctors are still working to manage his recovery, improve his feedings, and calm the episodes that come as his nervous system heals. But this is a little boy who has already done the impossible once. His parents sit beside him again, holding onto every small sign that the child who came back to them before is fighting his way back once more.
