🌽 A GMO (Genetically Modified Organism) is a plant whose DNA has been changed using genetic engineering to give it a specific trait, such as resisting certain insects or tolerating certain herbicides. Although some confusion exists on the subject, this type of laboratory modification is very different from traditional breeding and seed saving, where farmers save seeds from plants with desirable traits (like sweeter corn or larger tomatoes) and grow those over many generations. 🥦 In fact, broccoli, cauliflower, kale, cabbage, brussels sprouts, and kohlrabi all came from the same wild plant through selective breeding. What are the benefits? ⚖️ Supporters say GMO crops can: • Reduce crop losses from insects and disease. • Help farmers grow more food on the same amount of land. • Reduce the need for some insecticides. • Improve certain crops with traits like better nutrition or drought tolerance. So why are some people concerned? For some, the concern isn't the genetic modification itself. It's the farming practices that often go along with certain GMO crops. For others the modifications are seen at the very least as potentially dangerous. 🧪Herbicides: Some GMO crops are designed to survive specific weed killers. This can make weed control easier, but repeated use of the same herbicide can lead to herbicide-resistant weeds, requiring farmers to use additional or different weed-control methods over time. Indeed the use of glyphosate has continued to rise in part due to weed tolerance and resistance. 🕴️Patented seeds: Many GMO seeds are patented, meaning farmers often can't save seeds to plant the following year. Some worry this gives a small number of companies too much control over the seed supply, effectively establishing a monopoly. Additionally, some farmers have been put out of business having been accused of unauthorized seed use and dragged through court proceedings against corporate giants with monumental budgets. 🐝 The environment: Critics also raise concerns about biodiversity and the long-term effects of large-scale farming systems. So... are GMOs safe? Major scientific organizations, including the FDA, WHO, and the National Academies, have concluded that approved GMO foods are as safe to eat as comparable non-GMO foods. While "as safe as" might sound like an endorsement, it is important to remember that the nutritional content of many GMO foods have been analyzed in studies that confirm organic foods raised in better soil are more nutrient dense. The GMO conversation is less about whether they're safe to eat and more about food sovereignty/control and environmental concerns. Understanding the difference helps us make informed choices instead of fear-based ones. #naturelovers #eatwholefoods #healthconscious #nongmo #beginnergardener
