In the summer of 1968, aged 26, my dad, Roy A. Giles, drove a Land Rover 8000km from London to Afghanistan via Turkey and Iran. He had set off without his Afghan visa, so his assistant sent it on to Tehran for him to collect before he entered at the Islam Qala border post and crossed the country to Kabul. From there he continued to Jalalabad and on into the Hindu Kush. Leaving the Landy behind, he crossed the Kunar River into Nuristan by a raft of inflated cow skins and a prayer, and a local guide led him the last 130kms through the mountains. He spent a month walking in and around the Pech Valley, staying in Waygal, Asadabad and Wama and photographing the traditional houses of Nuristan. He also climbed one of the 6th-century Bamiyan Buddhas and sat on its head for 20 minutes, decades before the Taliban destroyed the statues in 2001. He arrived in the last quiet years. Afghanistan in 1968 was still a kingdom and still at peace, and Kabul was trying on the modern world, a new constitution, a parliament, women walking unveiled to lectures at the university. The road from Europe ran straight through it, and a generation of travellers strayed east as if the borders would always stand open. They would not. The king fell in 1973, the revolution came in 1978, and in 1979 the Soviet tanks crossed the border and more than forty years of war followed. The Buddha whose head he sat on is rubble now.
