I once worked for a company that mostly hired Indians and coloreds. They would refer to us black people as African as if they were European, that time I was lighter skinned than most of them. Colorism in that community is big.

My grandmother adopted a relatives child who was dark skinned like her dad but had a coloured mom, both parents passed away and her maternal grandmother wanted to take her to an orphanage and her reason was she is dark skinned. So this narrative exists.

my best friend was coloured. I am black female we met as adults and we became so close. his family was against our friendship 💔 😭 He fought for me and spoke out! they thought we were dating. He would invite me to his family events as i knew some of his family members and we were cool. I went to his sister's wedding i was the only black person there. his grandmother made a comment saying she has worked hard to make sure her family stays white. they mostly look white as they are married to white or Indian partners. when she said this she was looking me dead in the eyes 😭
