Truth and Reconciliation Day 🧡🦅 As the son of a residential school survivor, today felt heavy. I couldn’t take this day lightly. I felt the pain, the strength, and the power of our people. Today, I wear orange for those who never made it home, for those who survived, and for survivors like my dad. For a long time, I didn’t understand what my father was carrying. As I got older, I began to understand that when I was 13, he left carrying his own trauma because he didn’t want to place that pain onto his children. When we reconnected five years ago, he began opening up to me about what he had lived through. I saw a man trying to learn how to love again, how to forgive, and how to reconnect with his children despite everything he had carried for so many years. Over the years, our family has grown. From his 8 children to now 10 grandchildren, our story continues. Being raised by a single mother showed me a strength I didn’t know I had. She carried so much, and somehow continued to give us love, hope, and a reason to keep going. Yes, some of us still struggle. We’re not perfect, and healing doesn’t happen overnight. But through everything we’ve faced, our love is stronger. Today, I hoped I could be with my dad. Instead, I stand here carrying his hope, surrounded by the strength of my ancestors and the love that connects us across generations. Today, we honour those who came before us and recognize that the work of healing is still unfinished. We are here to heal the next generations. To empower our youth. To remind them of who they are, where they come from, and that their voices matter. Because reconciliation is not only about remembering the past. It is about what we choose to do with that truth today—and how we carry it forward for those who come after us. For my dad. For my mom. For our survivors. For those who never made it home. For our ancestors. For our family. For our youth. For the generations still to come. HIY HIY 🌿🧡🦅 #fyp #nativetiktok #indigenous #sober #truthandreconciliation
