as a child of the '80s and '90s, and a former US marine, this is one of my favorite films of all time! it came out well before I joined, but it was just part of the culture of the armed forces when I signed up to watch this movie. however, in my old age I am a pedantic a******, so I'm going to pick some s*** apart. 1. Kaffee's shitty attitude. this does not fly anywhere in the military. sure, some situations are looser than others. attorneys stationed in DC may not be as strict as infantry men at stumps. but you definitely don't get to go around in a stained uniform, eating an apple as you walk, and showing open and blatant disrespect to Superior commissioned officers. Kaffee is a boot lieutenant and would have been put in his place along f****** time ago. 2. before the office Not only would he not be able to sit there smacking on an Apple like an asshole, he also would not be allowed to walk around whatever campus they're on that way. he's carrying a briefcase, and eating an apple, which would mean his hand isn't free to salute. and that would get his ass in big trouble. 3. Galloway is useless I like her in the context of the film, because at least somebody is trying to hold that piece of s*** Kaffee accountable. but we know Rob Reiner watched way too many cop dramas. in this film, Galloway is "internal affairs". that's Police department s***. IA units investigate allegations against police officers and make recommendations for how to proceed based on those findings. IA officers are not attorneys, but most have spent several years in law enforcement. but, even they had IA and she was it, she probably has the investigative skills to learn why a boot lieutenant with less than a year with the Jag corps was given a high profile case, and then use that to blow the case wide open. then again, this officer cannot make up her mind. she spends the whole movie telling Kaffee ( correctly) about what a piece of s*** he is, but then when he decides to leave the case, she begs him to stay citing that no other lawyer is good enough and they need him or they can't win, despite being his first actual case.
