Miguel Keith was already badly wounded when roughly 25 enemy soldiers began gathering for another attack. The 18-year-old Marine charged directly toward them. On May 8, 1970, Lance Cpl. Miguel Keith was serving with a Combined Action Platoon in Quang Ngai Province, Vietnam. Keith had arrived in Vietnam only months earlier. As part of the Combined Action Program, he lived and worked alongside South Vietnamese local forces, helping protect villages while training residents to defend their communities. Then his position came under a powerful enemy attack. Keith was wounded early. He could have remained under cover. Instead, according to his Medal of Honor citation, he crossed exposed ground under heavy fire to help strengthen defensive positions. Then he took control of a machine gun. Despite his injuries, Keith continued defending the position as enemy fighters moved closer. Five approached the command post. Keith rushed forward and stopped the immediate threat. Then a gr*nade detonated nearby. He was wounded again. He was losing blood. Still, Keith saw another danger developing. Approximately 25 enemy soldiers were gathering for another push against his outnumbered platoon. Keith went toward them. Alone. His Medal of Honor citation records that the young Marine charged the group despite his condition, stopping four enemy fighters and forcing the others to retreat. Moments later, Keith was struck again. He did not survive. He was 18 years old. His actions helped break the attack and protect the Marines and local forces defending the village. On September 6, 1971, President Richard Nixon presented Keith's mother with his posthumous Medal of Honor. Decades later, the Navy carried his name back to sea. The expeditionary sea base USNS Miguel Keith (ESB-5) was named in his honor and commissioned into service in 2021. Miguel Keith had served in Vietnam for only a matter of months. He was still a teenager when his final battle began. He was wounded. Then wounded again. Twenty-five enemy soldiers were gathering in front of him. At 18, Miguel Keith didn't move away from them. He charged. Source Congressional Medal of Honor Society; U.S. Marine Corps; official Medal of Honor citation for Lance Cpl. Miguel Keith; U.S. Navy records for USNS Miguel Keith (ESB-5).
