🚨 WITNESS HISTORY IN THE MAKING Philadelphia is about to do something that took 239 years to make happen. On October 7, 2026, the city will officially dedicate Bishop Richard Allen Way—and this isn’t just a street sign. It’s a monument to Black institutional independence itself. Let me take you back to 1787. The ink on the Constitution was barely dry. And in Philadelphia—the same city where America was founded—Richard Allen and Absalom Jones were founding something equally revolutionary: the Free African Society. This wasn’t just a church group. It was a mutual-aid powerhouse. Black Philadelphians pooled their resources to: ✅ Care for widows ✅ Bury their dead with dignity ✅ Educate children ✅ Build systems of support for the community, by the community In other words, while America was debating freedom in theory, Richard Allen was practicing it in real time. Then came the stand that changed everything. When Allen established Bethel Church, he ignited a battle over a question America is still wrestling with: Who has the right to govern Black institutions? In 1815, the case Trustees of St. George’s Church v. Trustees of Bethel Church hit the courts—raising fundamental questions about Black governance, property ownership, and religious autonomy. Allen didn’t just fight. He won. And Bethel became Mother Bethel AME Church—one of the oldest Black-owned properties in America and the mother church of the entire African Methodist Episcopal denomination. Here’s why this matters. Richard Allen wasn’t simply building a church. He was building Black institutional independence. A legacy of: 🏛️ Land ownership 🤝 Mutual aid ⚖️ Self-governance ✝️ Faith 📜 Black constitutional practice All of it began generations before most institutions we celebrate today. And now, that legacy gets its own street. Join me in Philadelphia. Be in the room. 📍 Philadelphia, Pennsylvania 📅 October 7, 2026 🕚 11:00 AM — Street Renaming Ceremony & Celebration Don’t just read about history. Stand on it. 🙌🏾 #RichardAllen #FreeAfricanSociety #BlackHistory #PhiladelphiaHistory #BlackInstitutionalHistory #LandOwnership #MutualAid #BlackSelfGovernance #MotherBethel #BlackHistoryUniversity
