Rest easy, Pvt. 2nd Class Caleb Grant "Smitty" Smither. 🇺🇸 Caleb was only 19 — a paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg, having just earned his Airborne Wings months before. He looked up to the soldiers around him and was proud to serve. In January 2020, he became seriously ill and was failed by the system meant to protect him. He apparently hit his head on a radiator around January 10, was taken to Womack Army Medical Center where he vomited and showed signs of distress, but was sent back to his barracks. His squad leader was asked to check on him before a holiday weekend, and Smither was found dead six days later. An Army autopsy determined bacterial meningitis was the cause of death, and a later investigation found he'd been failed by leadership along the way. He should have gotten the care he needed. He didn't get the chance he deserved. He served. He trusted the Army to take care of him. He mattered. Rest easy, Smitty. You will not be forgotten. 🕊️ @Heather Hedge #resteasy #USArmy #miltok #fallenangel #NeverForgotten
