Miami Beach is not a real island. One man sucked it up off the floor of the ocean, then sold it to America using an elephant. In 1912 Carl Fisher had already built the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and made a fortune on car headlights. Then he came to Florida and looked across the water at a three mile sandbar of mangrove swamp, so thick with mosquitoes that nobody lived on it. He lent an old farmer fifty thousand dollars to finish a bridge out to it and took two hundred acres as payment. Then he brought in dredges, sucked the floor of Biscayne Bay up through pipes and sprayed it over the swamp until there was dry ground where there had been water. He was not developing land. He was manufacturing it. By 1915 it was a city. And nobody in America had heard of it. So Fisher bought a baby elephant, named her Rosie, strapped a golf bag to her back and had her photographed carrying the clubs of president elect Warren Harding. That winter the picture ran in newspapers across the frozen north. Palm trees, a president, and an elephant. It worked. America came. By 1925 that swamp had made Carl Fisher as much as a hundred million dollars. Then he did the same thing at the other end of the country, and it destroyed him. That story is next.
