Avatar has always been progressive, people just grew up with it and cant grapple that their favorite show as a kid was also "woke". Personally im very excited to see some non stereotypical Southern Asian representation in the franchise.

As a Katara fan girl since I was 9, on Tumblr since I was 13 they have been like that for a looooong time. The amount of times I had to defend Katara from people that purely hated her because she is brown is maddening, it's nothing new and whoever says it is it's either new or dumb
